More than 2,700 students took part in the GPS 2019 Basketball Premiership Season. Many tense and exciting matches across the age groups gave spectators a host of nail-biting moments court-side.

The season came to an exciting finale with St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace taking its first GPS Basketball Premiership in fifteen years, along with Churchie, with whom it shared the top honours.

Tom O’Malley, Acting Sports Coordinator highlighted the sentiments of Gregory Terrace, “The College is extremely proud of this group, whose growth across the season was significant and was exemplified in their composure under pressure. They represented the College in an outstanding fashion and were a team the entire program could be proud of. The Premiership is great reward for the leadership of Captain Mitchell Wright and Vice-Captain David Eltima, for Head Coach Matt Hamilton-Smith who oversaw the development of this group, and former Basketball Director Sam MacKinnon who heralded great change in Basketball at the College. This is a great result for players in all age groups, parent groups, team coaches and program staff, who all contributed to a successful season both on and off the court. Congratulations to Churchie and their Basketball Program with whom we share the 2019 GPS Premiership.”

Churchie’s Basketball Director Mr Trent Goodrick commented: We are proud that Churchie Basketball concluded another successful season with the 1st V being named joint GPS Premiers. The whole Churchie Basketball Program performed exceptionally, with 172 wins from 198 games played in 2019. The ongoing program success is the culmination of years of hard work, commitment and dedication from all involved, but in particular the amazing coaching staff, led by 1st V Head Coach Mr CJ Bruton – Brisbane Bullets Assistant Coach. Congratulations also to Gregory Terrace and all involved in their Basketball Program.”

Ipswich Grammar School and Brisbane State High School shared third place.

Congratulations to all 275 teams from across the age groups who showed the GPS Spirit of Fellowship in action throughout the 2019 Basketball season.
