4 March 2022

The Great Public Schools Association of Queensland (GPS) announces new Swimming Championship and Head of the River Dates.

Considering the unprecedented Extreme Weather Event in South-East Queensland and the closure of Schools on Friday 4 March, the GPS Association was forced to postpone the GPS Swimming Championships in the interests of community safety.  Concern is also held over the access to Wyaralong Dam for the Head of the River on Saturday 12 March 2022.

The unpredictable weather and the continued COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented change to the GPS Sport and Activities this season.  We are actively monitoring the situation to ensure that we can provide as much certainty as possible to our communities moving forward.  Based on the latest developments and with the support of the nine (9) member schools, the GPS Association can announce the following dates for postponed events.

The Ninety-Ninth GPS Swimming Championships will occur on Thursday 10 March 2022 with a 4.15pm first race.

Due to the availability of the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, the GPS Association will host the 2022 GPS Swimming Championship (13 Years & Over – Open) independently to the GPS Junior Carnival (10 Year & Under – 12 Years & Under).  The rescheduling of the GPS Junior Carnival is yet to be confirmed.

With the current closure of Wyaralong Dam by SEQ Water, and water testing requirements, the Head of the River will be postponed by 7 days to Saturday 19 March 2022.

The Year 8 Rowing Regatta postponed to Saturday 5 March is cancelled.  While this is a difficult decision and disappointment is shared for those who have been training hard, this decision is based on concluding their season as current uncertain weather will not guarantee a race on 19 March.

Recent events and circumstances have been challenging but we will continue to assess the circumstances in a considered manner and we appreciate the patience and understanding of all within the GPS community.  The safety of all staff, officials, students and families is our foremost priority as we seek to meet existing commitments and reschedule opportunities for our boys with as little impact as possible on existing academic calendars.

– 99th GPS Swimming Championships (13Y – Open), Thursday 10 March, 4.15pm
