Sir Francis Raymond Connelly Nudgee College, 1905-1910
Sir Francis was a successful businessman and lord mayor of Melbourne for three terms (1945-46, 1946-47 and 1947-48). He was a progressive reformer who sought a 'brighter' metropolis, urging the relaxation of laws on liquor and Sunday entertainment, longer shopping hours, the opening of an international airport and the training of hotel staffs to encourage tourists.
Sir Norman Rupert Mighell, Nudgee College, 1907-1910
Sir Norman was Australia's deputy high commissioner in London in 1946-49, and was knighted in 1951. Wounded on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, he was repatriated due to the severity of his wounds.
Professor Bruce Mayes, Toowoomba Grammar School 1917-1921
Professor Bruce Mayes was a student at Toowoomba Grammar School from 1917-1921. He was the first Australian to hold the Sims-Black Professorship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London in 1953.
Much loved by boarders for 22 years, Martha (Mattie) Bousfield (wife of Headmaster Frederick Bousfield) spoiled them with gifts and special activities. In 1911 she purchased a phonograph and frequently gave boarders new records to listen to.
Ian is a successful businessman, politician, sports administrator and philanthropist. He joined the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in about 1960, representing it as an Alderman on the Brisbane City Council for 14 years.
Lieutenant-General Henry John Coates AC, MBE, Ipswich Grammar School, 1943-1951
Continued his education at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, from which he graduated in 1955, returning later as its Commandant. He served on exchange with the United States Army and British Army before commanding a Cavalry (Armoured Personnel Carrier) Squadron in South Vietnam from 1970-71.
