MEDICAL

(1889–1963) Dr James Vincent Duhig was the first Professor of Pathology (1938-1947) at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane and helped to establish the School of Medicine at UQ. He was Founder of the Red Cross Blood Bank in Queensland.

Emeritus Professor Douglas Harry Lee was a Doctor of Medicine, specialised in Tropical Medicine. In 1935 he was Rockefeller Scholar at Harvard. In 1936 he was appointed as the first Professor of Physiology in the University of Queensland.

Following war service as a medical officer in the RAAMC Hamilton Stuart Patterson was a General Practitioner in Ipswich for 35 years and the Sunshine Coast for 25 years.

Sir Sydney Sunderland graduated from BSHS in 1929. He is a Medical Researcher, University Academic & Government Consultant. He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Melbourne University for many years whilst actively researching in the field of nerves and nerve injuries.

In 1968 Dr Harry carried out Australia's first heart transplant and was a mentor to renowned heart surgeon Victor Chang.

Dr Robert Scott was a student at Toowoomba Grammar School from 1941-1944. He was the Senior Adviser to the Commonwealth on occupational medicine.

Professor William B Coman, AM, MD, MBBS (Qld), FRCS (Edin),FRCS (Eng), FRACS Hons (Eng), FACS Hons – Emeritus Professor of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery UQ.

Kenneth John Donald entered medical school at the University of Queensland in 1956, obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1962.

Dr Alan Laws graduated from BSHS in 1953 as Dux of the School. As a clinician-scientist, Dr Laws studied the effects of anaesthesia on breathing mechanics, and is an internationally Recognised Doctor of Anaesthesiology
